The 4th Georgia Cavalry Regiment was formed in January 1863 with the 3rd
Georgia Cavalry Battalion as it's foundation. The 3rd
Cavalry Battalion consisted of six companies The men
that served in were from Appling,
Records are sketchy on the Georgia Cavalry units therefore making it difficult
to reconstruct the regiment's rosters. Although Appling countians
appear in both Company A and Company I early in the war, it appears that they
transferred to Company K later on in the conflict. There is also mention of
Captain John Mayers' Appling County Cavalry
garrisoned in Holmesville which could have been a
part of the 4th Cavalry.
